Mainland Greece was a peninsula that was surrounded by thousands of islands in the Mediterranean sea. Around 80% of Greece is covered in Mountains, creating very isolated civilisations. This was the cause for many conflicts between groups. Society changed a lot from one group to another. Each colony even had their own system of Governance.
Another challenge that was faced by ancient Greeks was that only 20% of their land was suitable for farming. This created a culture of a lot of trading with other countries. Hence, the Greeks became excellent sailors and ship builders. |
